Kellenberger investment maintains Kepston’s one micron culture.

Kepston-1As part of a major double investment in machine tools and the infrastructure of its manufacturing facilities, Aldridge, West Midlands based Kepston Limited has added further to its precision grinding expertise with the purchase of a Kellenberger KEL-VIVA CNC universal grinding machine. KEL-VIVA machines offer the user significant all round capabilities with the C-axis permitting the machining of unround components, threads and tapers in a single operation. It offers a significant workpiece capacity with a distance between centres up to 1000 mm, centre heights up to 175 mm and the ability to accommodate workpieces weighing up to 100 kg. With 95 years experience in the engineering industry Kepston is proud of its status as one of the UK’s leading manufacturers specialising in jig grinding technology. However, as managing director Brent Millage explains, “you can never rest on your laurels in this business. It is more competitive than ever with quality, price and turn-around important criteria. As such we strive to keep the company moving forward and that necessitates investment in the best machine tools. We regard ourselves as a 1 micron manufacturer,” continues Brent Millage. “We are all about high value projects with ultra high precision and small batches. We have a reputation for this type of work and it is vital to our customers that we stay at the forefront of technology – hence the on-going investment,” he explains. Kepston-2Kepston works across a range of end-user industries from F1 to aerospace and food processing. The Kellenberger acquisition will be particularly useful for operations where repeatable tooling is being manufactured, for example on capping tooling where 20 million cycles from a tool is not uncommon but where absolute precision is necessary when machining replacement components. In their quest for a universal cylindrical grinding machine that gives them the most flexibility, Kepston specified the Kellenberger KEL-VIVA UR 175 / 1000 model, an upgraded version of the KEL-VIVA R which features a B and C axis offering infinitely variable positioning of the wheelhead coupled with indirect measuring. Standard features include the KEL-SET automatic grinding wheel measuring system, KEL-TOUCH gap control with 3 sensors and KEL-BALANCE semi-automatic wheel balancing. Unround grinding operations are programmed through KEL-POLY and the complete control system is supplied by Heidenhain®. The machine structure is manufactured to a demanding specification being modular based to ensure all sources of heat or vibration are kept isolated from the workpiece and the machining operations. The hydrostatic guides for the longitudinal slide movement (Z-axis) and for wheel slide infeed (X-axis) provide the basis for the machine’s extreme accuracy. The X and Z axes are practically frictionless at all speeds and even the smallest increments of 0.1µ adjustment can be achieved without a problem. The tailstock runs in sturdy ball-bush bearings and features micro adjustment via a sensitive sleeve pressure adjustment within a range of +/- 60µ. “This machine has made a major contribution to our operations and maintains our long standing relationship with Jones & Shipman,” adds Brent Millage. “Now from one source we have technical support for our J&S and Kellenberger machines not forgetting the Hauser S35 CNC jig grinder that has been an integral part of our operations for the past few years.”
