Upgraded J&S Suprema is a true all-rounder

The upgraded Jones & Shipman Suprema Easy cylindrical grinding machine is a multi-purpose machine equally adept at processing high volume production grinding work or fulfilling demanding precision small batch quantities and one off work as encountered in tool room or prototyping environments. A key factor in the design of these robust and comprehensive cylindrical machines was the ongoing need for high geometric accuracy with quick changeovers between different grinding operations to maximise machine usage. Available in three grinding length capacities of 650mm, 1000mm and 1500mm between centres, Suprema machines offer two wheelhead options, External and Universal (External and Internal) and have been specifically designed to offer unrivalled ease-of-use coupled to the highest levels of productivity.Suprema PR 1 A key feature and real advantage comes from the speed of the set-up of dressing and grinding cycles via Jones & Shipman’s specialist fast-to-set “Easy” graphical grinding software, utilising touch screen technology. In addition to a new colour touch screen interface is the latest Fanuc power motor control that offers increased machine storage for thousands of dressing and grinding programmes. It also offers increased processing speeds to further optimize programming and set up’s along with improved connectivity via a USB port. The latest Fanuc digital drives and motors have also been added allowing greater performance responsiveness and a much more rigid and stiffer overall system. Also added are Heidenhain’s latest 12.5nm scales to both the vertical and crossfeed axes, providing 40% improvement on interpolation, through the 4X higher resolution now available. Increased diameters on both the left and right hand external wheels offer longer wheel life and improved productivity by reducing the number of dresses required in the grinding cycles. An optional increase to the wheel head power will also enable further increases in productivity and reduced cycle times, if required. Other standard features of this highly versatile machine include a manual mode as well as easy and rapid set-up for fully automatic dressing and grinding cycles via the touch screen. Dress mode offers as standard various wheel shape options – Flat, Slot, Facing, with “Vee form”, a cycle which combines radii and angles, allowing a further 20 different shapes to be constructed directly via the touch screen. All of these shape options feature “Intelligent Roughing” which rapidly roughs out the profile to save time and money. Full ISO is also standard to accommodate any profiles required that are not in the standard software suite. Grind cycle mode allows from a single or up to 20 grind cycles, as the complexity of the component dictates. Each has been developed to provide the operator with easy-to-follow, colour icon based programming via the touch screen giving the advantages of CNC control without the complexity of traditional CNC systems. This extremely simple system guides the operator and allows them to digitise positions and create programmes without any computer knowledge. The ‘Self-Teach’ features of the software ensure Suprema grinders will enable inexperienced and experienced operators alike to be immediately more productive.
